With a flick of her tanned wrist, she punched the zero on the speed dial of the tiny phone, sighed, and purred into the mouthpiece,  " He's back John, this time you'll simply have to kill  him. "

John snapped out of his reverie at the sound of Marissa's voice. This was the call he'd been dreading. ...

There are things that happen in one's life and before and after these events, we are never, ever the same. Now John could feel small beads of perspiration forming on his brow and his heartbeat quicken at the urgency in Marissa's voice. Damn it, he thought, why had HE chosen to reappear just when things had finally begun to settle. The old cliche 'caught between a rock and a hard place' crossed his mind but he knew instinctively he'd do whatever Marissa ordered. Hadn't he always !

John quivered to think of the task that lay before him. He not only had qualms about something as treacherous as murder, but how could he kill his best friend? After Marissa's call he could only think back to the days when he and his new enemy had shared coffee, friends, and similar goals. Richard had been like a brother to him, but somewhere lost sight of right and wrong. John remembered when he recognized the problem. Many years ago, Richard had decided to travel. He only made it outside the state when he met a woman, one which changed him into the cold hearted man that John now had to put down. Her name was Julie, and she was as calculated as an assasin with plenty of spare time. He stayed with her for months and was jubilant at the news that she was carrying his child, but Julie's reception of the news seemed lackluster at best.

Was that what had turned Richard, he thought, made him into the individual Marissa now loathed . Or was it something more sinister with her ? Knowing her as he did, he suspected she had an agenda that probably defied anything he could imagine. What wasn't she telling him that could possibly warrant murder ? Only one way to find out he thought, reaching for his coat and the shiny, black Beretta he kept hidden in his desk drawer. This time he wasn't taking any chances.

Marissa stared into the tiny receiver of her phone, lost in thought, when a man’s voice broke the silence, “Did he sound receptive to your proposal?” “Yes,” She said. “I would abhor the thought that years of planning were in ruin due to moral inhibitions or a lack of commitment,” the voice resounded. “I wouldn’t worry about that. He’ll do what ever I ask him to do.” “Yes, he is, no doubt, enchanted by your beauty Marissa; after all, he had nothing worthy of remembrance in his life until you seduced him.” “Then I guess that makes two of you,” she said.

"Very well," said Richard. Briefly he wondered what hold John still had on reality. Julie had taught him that he still loved Marissa. Loosing the baby to her thaughtlessness in deciding it was her choice alone had severed the last link he had with her. He had been a person who was infinitely capable of love towards the unborn, willing to enter into marriage with Julie knowing his feelings for Marissa. All could be resolved with patience, understanding and a willingness to honestly deal with the tangled web that was their relationships. But then there was John.
Friends since childhood Richard had learned that John was capable of great things. His gogged determination and singleminded abililty to concentrate on the task required made him capable of reaching the zenith of any venture he wanted to. But it had all turned inward. Marissa became an object of his desire, a fulcrum on which to base the meaning of his life. And he himself had become the object of his designs. Somehow John had managed to convince himself that his erlationship with Julie, her pregnancy, had hurt Marissa. Had in fact made Marissa hate him in a way which should have been terminal. John had tried to kill him before, but failed. His trip to Mongolia had meant that John had been unable to make sure, and even allowed John to think that he had fled for good. His return had triggered his hatred again, and Marissa had recognised the danger. Now it was he who must turn the tables.
The situation had become dangerous, the mindset is fixed. The game is afoot, and the survivour gains everything. He had only one question. Who did Marissa want to survive?

Marissa's eyes glinted as she purred smoothly to Richard, "Darling, you know I can't wait 'till we can finally be together. Your're the only man I've ever loved." Richard pulled her roughly to him and crushed her lips with his.

John slid into his coat, looked around the office, his gaze stopping at a picture on his desk. Marissa was one beautiful woman! She had captured his heart, but he would not be fooled by her anymore. The photo of him and his once best friend sitting beside hers, caught his eye. That was a constant reminder of all the pain he'd been through. He raised his Beretta, and focused his aim on Richard. Than slowly his arm swung to the side catching Marissa's forehead in his vision. The empty click of his gun, brought him back to the job at hand. Releasing the trigger, he slid the gun halfway across the desk, as if he loathed it. "This is the last time." he said aloud, his voice re-sounding against the walls.
At that moment there was a soft knock on the door, and the door opened behind him. The smell of musky perfume told him who was there. That was a good sign. She could comfort him in ways he'd never felt before.
